Kick boxer Kate Davis was named the adult athlete of the year, race walker Audrey McCarthy was named youth athlete of the year and curler Ab Doyle was named senior athlete of the year at the Peterborough Civic Awards ceremony held Tuesday night at the Sport and Wellness Centre.
Adult Athlete of the Year: Kate Davis
Kate Davis has a passion for kick boxing and practices at World Championship Martial Arts in Peterborough. She spends countless hours there training to become the best she can be.
This past year she competed in a national championship, where she got her first taste of this level of competition.
She competed in the under 60 kg kick light division where she defeated her opponent and won a national title.
Junior Athlete of the Year: Audrey McCarthy
Audrey McCarthy has gained major success in race-walking, despite only been competing in the sport for a short period of time.
She won a bronze medal in the U16 Canadian Championships and a gold medal in the Canadian Indoor Championships, where she broke the event record by nearly a minute.
She has also been recognized by St. Peter CSecondary School for her athletic achievements by being named MVP of her cross country and track and field teams. She finished first overall in the 3000m run at the Kawartha high school track and field finals in 2017 and represented her school at the OFSSAA finals.
She is also a decorated local distance runner, having placed 1st in the 2017 YMCA Healthy Kids Run, the Cavan Hills Run, and first in her age group at the Lakefield Polar Run.
Senior Athlete of the Year: Ab Doyle
Ab Doyle skipped his curling team of Brant Doyle, Bob Bergmann and Rob Roy at the 2017 Ontario’s Senior Men’s curling championship representing the Peterborough Curling Club. It has been several years since a team from the Peterborough Curling Club qualified for a provincial curling championship.
He also skipped his team to win the Peterborough Curling Club’s Monday Men’s Grand Aggregate title and the Tuesday Men’s Grand Aggregate title in 2017. His team won the Sr. Men’s league in March 2017 and won bronze at the Ontario Silver Tankard men’s curling event held in April 2017.
He has also completed his 100th triathalon.
Athletic Award of Merit: Paul Brown
Paul Brown has taught judo for 60 years as a volunteer at the Peterborough Family YMCA.
He is the head instructor of Judo at the YMCA. He received his fourth degree of black belt in 1997 and since then has helped many students achieve their black belt. He has trained his students to compete at the provincial level and even had some of them qualify for national championships.
The YMCA of Central East Ontario held a celebration to mark his dedication and commitment to adult and youth judo participants.
Atheltic Awards of Merit
Ron Challice: In 2017, Ron Challice won the
Men’s Elder A gold medal at the Ontario Horseshoe Club Singles Championships held in Wellesley in August.
The Elder A class is for members over 65 years of age. He also won the Elmer Hohl tournament in 2017 in the Elders A Class.
He is rated the third best player in Canada as well as the best in the province for his age category.

Meghanne Hiltz won her fifth Provincial A Championship in August with the Lady Blue Knights girls field lacrosse team.
In July 2017, her rep lacrosse team competed in Michigan, winning the tournament while playing in two age divisions above their normal level.
She is also a long-distance runner and enjoys competing in track and field and cross country events.
She has played soccer, volleyball and basketball for her school teams. Meghanne is in her fifth year as a rep basketball player with the Peterborough Power U14 girls team. *****
Lauren Bell has represented Peterborough at one international and five provincial level events in both hockey and lacrosse.
She has played at the highest level possible in both sports, for the Peterborough Girls Hockey Association, Kawartha Field Lacrosse and St. Peter Secondary School.
In 2017, she was selected for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Associations U16 High Performance Camp/ Tournament as well as Team Ontario’s U17 Field Lacrosse Team.
She also volunteered with Peterborough Indoor Volleyball where she coached an U13 team to a house league championship.

The 2017 Peterborough Minor Mosquito AA Tigers Baseball team worked hard all year, practising twice a week, and playing 24 regular season games. They made it through one round of playoffs to qualify for the AA Ontario Baseball Championship, eventually beating Niagara Falls to win the OBA AA Championship.
The roster included: Drew Stabler, Michael Hancock, Owen Fitzgerald, Camden Burke, Zach Russelle, Nathan Gerelus, Riley Hagerman, Cole Scanlan, Jordan Evans,
Joe Lucas, Tye Hill, Graydon Jones and Hudson Burgess.
Coaches were: Andy Stabler, Brian Evans, Kevin Fitzgerald and Darryll Hancock.

Abigael Hiltz won her eighth Provincial A Championship with her Lady Blue Knights girls field lacrosse team in August 2017.
She was a first year player in the U19 division and led her team in points and assists, and led the league in assists. she was integral to the team’s success in the championship game, scoring three goals and assisting on five others.
In 2017, she was also able to proudly represent the province on the U17 Ontario Girls Field Lacrosse Team which defeated the U.S. team in three straight games and claimed the Brogden Cup in Florida.
She was also part of the Sports Excellence and Athletic Leadership program at Holy Cross Secondary School, leading the Hurricanes basketball team at the 2017 COSSA championship.
She took part in the Kawartha Girls Field Lacrosse summer camps, officiated girls field lacrosse at the rep and provincial levels and volunteered at the Ontario Lacrosse Association Festival.

Adam Guthrie and Ryan Blinn represented Canada at the Special Olympics World Games in Austria in March 2017 in floor hockey.
Adam, who participated in his third Special Olympics and Ryan in his first, both returned home with silver medals in floor hockey.
They have also played in the 2015 Provincial Games and 2016 Nationals. Adam’s team has also won the Trinity College Tournament, the St. Peter’s Classic Games Tournament, and the Kawartha and Central Ontario Secondary School Association championships.

The Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School Griffins junior football team were 2017 Junior Kawartha champions, 2017 COSSA AAA champions and the 2017 Metro Bowl AAA quarter-finalists.

The St. Peter Secondary School Saints girls hockey team won the Kawartha COSSA district tournament and came home with a bronze medal from the OFSSAA provincial tournament.
