The Chemong Public School Dragons were crowned the champions at the Kawartha Pine Ridge Elementary Athletic Association North Intermediate Ultimate Disc Tournament at Beavermead Park on Wednesday.
The day-long event included both a competitive and recreational division. Both divisions had six teams with athletes from the ages of 12 to 14.
The Chemong Public School mixed junior ultimate disc team won against Westmount Public School 6-5 in the semifinals.
Additionally, James Strath beat Adam Scott 6-3 in the semifinals.
Fighting for third place and to qualify the board-wide KPREAA Intermediate Ultimate Disc Tournament, Westmount and Adam Scott played each other.
Adam Scott beat Westmount 5-1, placing third.
To establish first and second place, Chemong played James Strath.
Chemong beat James Strath 7-2, winning the finals.
James Strath placed second. Victoria Palmer, a Grade 7 student at Adam Scott, has been playing ultimate disc since grade four.
“I’m on PUL (Peterborough Ultimate League) Junior. It’s a league in Bridgenorth,” she said.
Palmer said the school’s league is fun.
“We all have a good time here,” she said.
Palmer encourages students from other schools to join their school’s league.
Grade 8 James Strath student Jamie Cooper played in the competitive division for the first time this year.
“It was great being on a competitive team,” Cooper said.
Cooper played last year in the recreational division.
“At times there’s excitement, but when your mark gets the point and you get down by a lot, you feel like it’s your fault,” he said.
Cooper said he feels good that his team made a success out of today and looks forward to playing in the next tournament.
The board-wide KPREAA Intermediate Ultimate Disc Tournament including teams from Peterborough city and county, Northumberland County and Clarington and will take place June 18 at Cobourg Beach.
