Wednesdays are wild at summer museum camps

Wild Card Wednesdays return to the Peterborou­gh Museum and Archives again this summer. It’s a series of one day camps for children seven to 11 years old.

The program runs Wednesdays from July 4 to Aug. 22, and features weekly themes, with topics ranging from science to art to history.

Activities include arts and crafts, sports and active play, drama, leadership and more.

Wildcard Wednesdays run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with half day or full day options.

2018 Camp Themes

July 4, Museum Magic: Test your knowledge of card tricks and illusions and learn what it takes to be a magician.

July 11, Fun with Fossils: Learn about the fascinatin­g world of archaeolog­y and create fossils, participat­e in an archaeolog­ical dig and learn about dinosaurs.

July 18, Under the Sea: In this camp, explore the mysterious creatures that live under the sea, to learn all about the underwater world and make shoe box aquariums.

July 25, Ice Age Exploratio­n: Did you know that the Earth is still in an Ice Age? Explore a world of Woolly Mammoths, Saber-Toothed Cats and ice while investigat­ing the suitcase exhibit from the Museum of Nature.

Aug. 1, Amazing Race: Riddles, games and challenges will be completed to advance you and your team to the finish line. Use your mind and agility to get your team ahead.

Aug. 8, Jolly Jousting: Step back in time to explore a world of castles, crowns and dragons in this day filled of medieval fun.

Aug. 15, Creative: Get creative with art. Campers interpret art, explore different techniques and work at creating masterpiec­es to take home.

Aug. 22, In our Backyard! Discover the many different species of wildlife that live in the Peterborou­gh area. Visit the museum's newest exhibit "On the Trail of the Monarch Butterfly," explore our local forest and learn about the ecosystems in our own backyard.

All programs take place at the museum grounds and buildings. You can find the PMA at 300 Hunter St. E., on top of Armour Hill.

Youth Leadership Program

The PMA also needs youth volunteers to run summer programs.

The youth leadership program is for youths aged 14+, and includes three days of training, followed by a two week placement in Summer Discovery camps. Training runs the first week of July and prepares you for volunteeri­ng with children four to 11 years old.

Orientatio­n days for youth leaders happen during the first week of July.

Topics include leadership, team-building and child developmen­t.

You can choose a two week placement between July 9- August 17 in either Junior Discovery or Summer Discovery camps.

Cost

There is a $25 +HST fee for the Youth Leadership Program. There is also an optional Emergency First Aid training slated for July 4. The optional training costs $55.
