New park trail system celebrated
A blue sky and warm temps greeted people devoted to the experience of nature gathered at the John Earle Chase Memorial Park on Saturday, June 2 to officially open the newly cleared and marked trail system at the property.
The property was donated to Parks Canada by Ralph and Evelyn Chase in 1995. It became a focus of Buckhorn Trails Association for trail development in 2015. Kawartha Land Trust took an interest in the efforts of BTA which motivated a partnership with Trent Severn Waterways and the municipality of Trent Lakes. The trails have been cleared. Trail marking will continue. A parking lot will be installed. Signage is in the planning stage. The wishes of the Chase family that the property is cared for will happen.
Where is this property? Coming from Buckhorn pass the BCC and the fire hall, continue past Sandy Lake and the turn to Lakehurst. Continue on this road past the turn to ELIM and turn right at the top of the hill by Anchor Bay Campground. Follow this road around to the left past a marshy area. There is a driveway on your left soon after the marshy area where the parking lot will be installed. This is where the trailhead is for all the main trails. Again, signage will be installed there mapping the various paths. Going straight on the path off the parking area will provide a kilometer trail of wooded
environment. A turn to the right on the path from the parking area will lead to the three and five kilometer trails. The three km trail crosses the road to the Pigeon Lake side.
Coming from Ennismore cross the Gannon’s Narrows Bridge, take the road to the left, go up the hill and the access to the trails will be on the right at the bottom of the hill.
A review of the ceremony is on kawarthalandtrust.org.
