The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers reeled off their fourth consecutive win thumping the host Cobourg Kodiaks 12-5 at the Cobourg Community Centre on Sunday night.

The Lakers (4-1-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the MSL followed by the Oakville Rock (3-1-0), Brooklin Redmen (2-0-0), Six Nations Chiefs (1-2-0), Kodiaks (0-2-1) and Brampton Excelsiors (0-4-1).

The Lakers led 3-0 after three shots three minutes into the game on the way to building a

10-1 lead. The game got chippy in the second half with a couple of fights and a steady parade of penalties.

Holden Cattoni, who had three goals and an assist, said it’s a challenge to get through a lopsided game.

“It’s all about habits,” Cattoni said, in a post-game YourTV interview. “We just have to play together and focus on playing without the ball and sharing the ball.”

He said the rough play is expected when a game gets one-sided.

“Guys are playing for pride and we totally understand that. I know everyone has been on the other side of those throughout their career,” he said.

Jeff Swift led the Lakers with three goals and three assists while Corey Small had two goals and four assists. Kyle Buchanan had two goals and an assist, Turner Evans a goal and three assists and Shawn Evans a goal and two assists. Andrew Suitor and Cam Milligan had assists. Lakers’ goalie Doug Buchan picked up an assist while earning his fourth win subbing In net while Evan Kirk and Matt Vinc completed the National Lacrosse League final.

Peterborough native Kyle Killen, acquired by Cobourg in the Small trade last month, had a goal and assist for the Kodiaks. Colton Armstrong also scored as one of six Peterborough minor lacrosse graduates playing for Cobourg. Dylan Goddard had two goals and Connor Goodwin a goal and two assists.
