Molly Strain made a splash as a Grade 9 student at her first OFSAA Track and Field Meet.

Adam Scott Collegiate brought home three bronze medals with Strain earning two and Heather Humphrey the other. The OFSAA meet was held Thursday through Saturday at York University.

In the open girls’ 1500-metre steeplechase, against girls three to four years older, Strain missed a gold medal by 0.52 seconds running a personal best by seven seconds of 5:04.37 on Friday. She also beat her personal best by 19 seconds in finishing third in the midget girls’ 3000m run on Saturday finishing 5.22 seconds off first place.

“I’ve been working really hard but I didn’t really know how I’d do against the whole province,” said Strain. “it’s cool to be able to be third out of everyone in the province.”

Strain trained for three years with James Onusko, who is also her soccer coach, and this past year with Richard Borek and the Peterborough Legion Track Club. She says Adam Scott coaches Roger Jenkins and Debbie Daley have also been big influences. She wasn’t intimidated by older competition.

“It wasn’t so much intimidating as it was motivating to be able to push myself and see if I was right up there with older runners,” said Strain.

Humphrey won bronze in the junior girls’ shot put with a throw of 12.61m. She set East Regional, COSSA and Kawartha records this year.

Taya Keast, a Grade 9 student from St. Peter’s, who set a COSSA record this year, finished sixth in the midget girls’ 200m dash, 1.02 seconds behind the gold medal time. Keast also placed 11th in the midget girls’ 100m in 12.79.

St. Peter’s Gustav Finley placed eighth in the open boys’ 2000m steeplechase in 6:11.72.

Elise Emery, of Adam Scott, placed 10th in the junior girls’ high jump with a leap of 1.5m.

Norwood District’s Marisha Thompson placed 11th in the open girls’ 1500m steeplechase in 5:25.14. She is a Grade 10 student and competed against athletes two to three years older.

Tristen Jones, from St. Peter’s, finished 12th In the senior boys’ 1500m run in 4:00.77.
