Keene set to mark 185 years

Celebrations planned for special June weekend

- PAT MARCHEN

A celebration of 185 Years in the Heart of Keene will be crammed into one special weekend in June as the history of Keene United Church is recognized with an enticing list of things to see and do.

The history of the congregation dates back to the 1820s and the arrival in Otonabee of European settlers and their assorted faiths. The current church was built for the Presbyterians in 1884 and the dedication service was held June 24, 1885. In 1927 it became the Keene United Church when the Methodist, Congregationalist and Presbyterian Churches of Canada united.

Celebrations begin with a coffee house and Open Mic session June 23, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring music with Stockdale Central and the CD release of gospel music by Sharon Doughty.

There will be a donation box at the door and treats will be available for a slight cost.

On June 24, the Anniversary Worship Service will be at 11 a.m., but come an hour early to schmoooze and view the photo displays.

A strawberry social will follow at noon.

Houses of OSM

Houses of Otonabee and South Monaghan will be featured at the next OSM Historical Society meeting.

An ambitious project to find old pictures or take new ones of all the houses in the township is being led by Val Crowley. If you can contribute to the project, contact Val at brianval[at]sympatico.ca.

The meeting is in the OSM Historical Society headquarters in the Keene library June 26, 7:30 p.m.
