Parkinson’s group raises $5K at Gilmour sale

Group’s popular annual barbecue and plant sale is a hit

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL

The Peterborough/Kawartha Lakes Chapter of Parkinson Canada raised approximately $5,000 at their barbecue and plant and yard sale held during the Annual Gilmour Street Sale May 26.

“The members of the chapter would like to thank all the shoppers (even the 6:30 a.m. keeners!), volunteers and whoever held the rain off till the afternoon,“says chapter member Vivian Heinmiller.

“Thanks (also) to the many members, friends and neighbours who helped set up and take down, potted plants, donated rhubarb, baking, plants, sale items and sold enthusiastically all morning making the sale very successful.”

The funds raised go to the Peterborough Movers and Shakers team as their pledge for Parkinson SuperWalk that will be held Sept. 8 at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School.

Special thanks goes to Master Gardeners of Peterborough who were present throughout the sale to price and sell the plants, Lanny Thomas who organized the barbecue with help from a crew of early onset chapter and family members, and Joe Van Koeverden who organized the garage sale, arriving before 6:30 a.m. to greet the first shoppers.

Additional thanks goes out to King Street Market, Costco, Farmboy, Freshco (Lansdowne St.), Metro, Home Depot, Real Canadian Superstore, St. John's Centre and Sysco Central Ontario for their contributions, BE Catering for the loan of a six-footlong charcoal barbecue (this helped sell out the barbecue before noon!), and Groundcovers Unlimited of Bethany who have donated many flats of perennials over many years.

The Peterborough/Kawartha Lakes Chapter of Parkinson Canada has raised over $80,000 for Parkinson’s since 1998 at the Gilmour Street Sale.
