TAS junior boys repeat at Barbarian Cup
The Thomas A. Stewart (TAS) Griffins junior boys’ rugby team won its second straight Barbarian Cup in Belleville on Monday, capping a 23-0 season.
TAS defeated Bill Crothers 19-12 in the afternoon final after defeating Centre Wellington (Fergus) 25-19 in the morning.
Cole Fallis, Noah Thomson and Emmitt Shebib each had tries in the final, while Robin French added two converts. In the semi-final, Max Levasseur, Fallis, Shebib and Tye Alleway each had tries while French added a convert and penalty kick.
TAS juniors were 23-0 this season and 43-0 last two years won back-to-back Barbarian Cups.
“They worked really hard,” said Griffins’ coach Jeff Challice. “We graduated a lot of kids from last year and this year’s group stepped up and played really good rugby all year and played as a team rather than as individuals and had a really good season.”
Earlier, TAS defeated Eastdale 14-12. Levasseur had two tries while Thomson had one. French had two converts.
The Griffins also beat Frontenac 22-5. Thomson and Levasseur each had two tries, while French had two converts.
TAS also defeated Crescent 22-0. Levasseur had three tries, while Fallis had one. French had one convert.
The Adam Scott Lions’ junior boys’ rugby team, meanwhile, defeated Centre Wellington in the Barbarian Cup consolation final on Monday.
The team lost 20-12 to Bill Crothers in a morning semi-final before winning by the same score in the consolation final, played in the afternoon along with the medal games.
Adam Scott earlier beat Northern (Toronto) 22-6. Tries were scored by Nate Oatway, Jacob Verner, Brock Gillespie and Landris Kervin. Trenton Jennings added a convert.
The Lions defeated F.E. Madill (Wingham) 33-0. Makenzi Green got over the line three times, as did Gillespie and Mitchell Churipuy. Jennings added four converts.
They made it three straight by beating Barrie North 22-7. Green had another hat trick and Marshall Doyle scored late, converted by Jennings.
“Very impressive to have two Peterborough schools in a provincial semi-final,” said Lions’ coach Sandy Keay.
