Wolverines win pair in Aurora

Football teams hosted by York Lions

The Peterborou­gh Wolverines won two of three games against the York Lions in Ontario Football Conference action in Aurora on Saturday.

The Bantams Wolverines won their first game of the season 44-27. The Junior Varsity squad improved their record to 2-1 with a hard fought 14-7 win. The Senior Varsity Wolverines lost a heart-breaker to the Lions 15-14.

The bantams took a 20-6 lead after the first quarter. They continued to build that lead and displayed a well balanced offensive attack. Scoring bantams touchdowns were Nate Thomson and Spencer Watchorn with two each and singles for Ryan Forsythe and Quintin Nattress. Scoring two-point converts were Thomson, Nattress, Joe Parsons and Sam Levassuer. The Bantams host the Waterloo Predators Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas A. Stewart Athletic Field.

The JV Wolverines and Lions were involved in a real battle. The Wolverines started the game with an opening kickoff return of 95 yards for a TD by Max LeVasseur to take a quick 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Mack McFarlane had a big run of 60 yards for a TD as the Wolverines led 14-7 at the half. Both teams played well on defence in the second half and the Wolverines held onto the 14-7 victory improving their record to 2-1. Both TDs were converted by Spencer Vasnaver. The next game for the JV’s will be Sunday as they travel to Belleville to face the Quinte Skyhawks in a 6 p.m. game.

In the night cap, the SV Wolverines lost in the last minute 15-14. The Wolverines scored a TD on their first offensive drive and led 11-0 at the half. They increased that lead to 14-1 well into the fourth quarter. With just over four minutes to play, the Lions came to life and scored two TDs with the last one coming with 23 seconds remaining.

Scoring for the Wolverines were Connor Murney with a TD and Zac Vesnaver with a convert kick and a 23-yard field goal. The Wolverines were awarded two team safeties.

The Wolverines host Waterloo Saturday at 5 p.m.

It has been a challengin­g start to the OFC season for the Wolverines as they have played eight of nine games on the road and look forward to playing on home turf.
