A gift of flowers for Mapleview in Norwood
Horticultural Society donates planters in memory of a longtime member
Visitors to Mapleview Retirement Residence will likely notice a couple of new additions to the serene garden landscape; Norwood’s retirement home was recently gifted with two new elevated flower planters compliments of the Asphodel-Norwood Horticultural Society.
The planters are dedicated to the memory of the late Doreen Girven. A former resident at Mapleview, Doreen unfortunately passed away last year, she was a lifelong resident of Norwood and her love for plants and flowers made her a valued and respected charter member of the Asphodel-Norwood Horticultural Society.
The society received a number of memorial donations in Doreen’s name and decided that a fitting tribute for her would be to honour her love for horticultural pursuits by providing Mapleview with the new planters. The planter boxes are elevated so that the residents will have the opportunity to easily tend to the flowers and continue to enjoy their own garden hobbies.
A short dedication ceremony was held last week with several members of the
Horticultural Society, Doreen’s family and friends, plus staff and residents from Mapleview present to accept the planters.
Hospice Hike
Support for Norwood’s new hospice continues to grow. Last weekend in the neighbouring village of Havelock resident Doug (aka Mugger) Hart organized a Hike for Hospice with all proceeds going to Hospice Norwood. Sunshine and comfortable temperatures greeted the nearly 50
participants who took to the area roads for the early morning walk in support of a great project.
Walkers collected pledges for a number of weeks before the walk raising approximately $20,000; quite an achievement for a couple of small towns. Hospice Norwood extends there sincere thanks to the event sponsors including Ed and Paula Leslie from the Havelock Jamboree, Tim Horton's of Havelock, Campbellford Food Supply, M&M Foods, Unimin Canada, RBC, HBM Fire Department and last, but most certainly not least, Doug Hart. Also a big thank you must go to all the volunteers, walkers and pledgers, next year will be even bigger and better.
There was the beef
The Norwood Masonic Lodge hosted their Annual Beef Barbeque on June 9. Over 600 hungry guests filled the Norwood Community Centre to tuck into the tender roast beef with all the trimmings. Officially this was the 51st annual Norwood Masonic barbecue.
The event traces its roots back to 1967 when the first beef dinner was held in the back yard at the home of one of the organizations members. Growing quickly in popularity, the barbeque soon became a much anticipated community tradition that attracts people from all over.
The Masons extend their thanks to everyone that came out to support them.
