Comeback victory sparks Tigers’ AA tournament win in Thornhill
The Peterborough Burrows Insurance Major Peewee Tigers went 5-0 to win the Thornhill AA Tournament on the weekend.
On Friday night Peterborough faced North Toronto and managed a come-from-behind lateinning victory. Owen Thomson pitched well, keeping Toronto close until the offence erupted late.
The comeback was sparked by Jon Groves and Cam McDermott getting on base to start the rally. Key doubles by Thomson and Nate King secured the win.
In Game 2 on Saturday the Tigers defeated the host Thornhill Reds in walk-off fashion. Kohl Millitz and McDermott were effective on the mound and the offence was led by Tom Malcolm and Walter Carley. Luc Legault was the hero with a twoout single in the bottom of the last inning.
The Tigers then faced Leaside in the final round-robin game winning 10-1. Carley pitched five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. The offence was led by Reid Cherwaty with three hits and three RBI.
The semifinal was a rematch with Thornhill. King and Shawn Fitzgerald combined for an effective pitching performance. The offence was sparked by Millitz and Ethan Toms.
The final was also a rematch against North Toronto. Thomson pitched a gem throwing a complete game and surrendering only two earned runs on four hits. Rivor Taylor impressed with a massive three-run home run, clearing the 300-foot sign with plenty to spare leading the Tigers to victory. Thomson was named tournament MVP.
