Trent swimmers win 20 medals at Sudbury meet

The Trent Swim Club picked up 20 medals at the 2018 Jeno Tihanyi Championsh­ips Hosted by Sudbury’s Laurentian Swim Club.

The event featured approximat­ely 500 athletes and 22 teams from Huronia and Northeaste­rn Region. The Trent Torpedoes sent 30 athletes to the long course meet and finished eighth overall scoring over 310 points after three days of competitio­n.

Leading the way for Trent was 16 year old male swimmer Evan Feick with five medals including three gold (50,100 and 200 metre breastroke) and two bronze (200 IM and 800 freestyle). Following closely behind was Rachel Chayer with three medals including gold (200 freestyle), silver (200 IM) and bronze (800 freestyle). Chayer was top eight in two other events (100 fly and 100 freestyle). Samantha Garside, 12, had two medals; gold in the 200 fly and silver in the 100 fly and was top eight in the 50 fly and 400 IM. Older sibling Mackenzie Garside had wins in the 200 and 100 breaststro­ke and finished top eight in the 400 IM and 200 backstroke.

Lucas Pavalachi Sofrone, 13, had a strong debut at the meet with a win in the 200 fly and two bronze medals in the 50 fly and 100 fly. John Mitchell, 13, won two medals including the 100 breaststro­ke (bronze) and 50 breaststro­ke (silver). Tanner Harris Barton won a bronze medal in the 100 fly, and finished top eight in 400 freestyle, 200 IM and 100 freestyle. Tristan Melville, 14, had top eight placings in the 100 breaststro­ke, 200 breaststro­ke, 50 breaststro­ke and 100 freestyle.

Ryder Linde Elmhirst, 16, earned a bronze medal in the 200 fly and scored in the top eight in 400 and 200 freestyle. Patrick Tompkins, 14, had personal bests and top eight finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Tompkins, Melville, Pavalachi and Samuel Baker finished third overall in the 400 medley relay and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay. Samuel Loureiro Kent inished top eight in the 200 and 50 backstroke. Teammate Taggert Johnson had two top eight placings and combined with Feick, Linde Elmhirst and Loureiro Kent to finish fourth in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Kelly Mitchell, 11, had a bronze medal in the 400 IM and Rowan Campbell, 10, finished top eight in the 50 backstroke. Jaiden Rose, 15, had two top eight placings in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Ellie Ferrari had a top eight placing in the 100 backstroke and teammate Meg Rogers had a top eight in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Rounding out the swimmers finishing top eight in one event were Zoe Campbell, Bella Crockower, Haley Griffin and Kate Hopkins.

TSC will attend three competitio­ns this month at the Swim Ontario Summer Festival, Swim Ontario AA provincial­s and the Collingwoo­d Clippers Invitation­al.
