Davidson running in Town Ward
Writer Jane Davidson is running for city council in Town Ward.
Davidson owns and operates two businesses: Best Write Communications (which offers her writing and editing services), and Jane Davidson Writing Coach (which offers her help on writing projects).
She recently helped Green party candidate Gianne Broughton with her campaign and says she believes in the Green platform – particularly the emphasis on greentech and fiscal responsibility.
Davidson also says she cares deeply for the marginalized and homeless and would like to advocate for them on council.
“They need to know we’re paying attention,” she said. “That’s a really important part of what I’m about.”
Davidson grew up in Montreal and moved to Peterborough to become one of the early graduates of Trent University.
She later moved to Toronto, and has been both a newspaper reporter and a public relations professional. Later she moved back to Peterborough.
She said she was approached about 20 years ago and asked to run for council, but at the time she was the single mother of two teenage daughters.
It wasn’t the time to run for council, she said – yet she never quite dismissed the idea.
Now she says she wants to bring the perspective of a single female woman entrepreneur who lives at The Mount to council.
She says she’s also been concerned lately with an apparent lack of collaboration on city council, with certain councillors typically voting together as a block and others voting against them.
Davidson doesn’t want to see that anymore, she said.
“Because council’s a team – and you can’t have people rowing in different directions in the same boat.”
Prospective candidates have until July 27 to file their nomination papers at City Hall. The municipal election is Oct. 22.
