Educator explains why fire permits matter

- MARLYS KERKMAN SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER kerkmam@gmail.com

This year makes 16 years that the Trent Lakes Fire Department and Community Care have prepared a picnic – sausages and burgers prepared by the firefighters and salads and dessert prepared by community care volunteers.

This year John Harvey, Trent Lakes Fire Department educator, stressed the importance of a fire permit. The times for open air burning – 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. – and dates - April – October are listed. Other regulations are included on the permit. He stressed the importance of announcing a burn by calling 1-800-374-4009 ext. 301 or 1-705-738-3800 and calling again when finished. If someone calls in saying that smoke is seen your call helps the fire department locate a fire and its significance.

Because we are on a busy flight path with planes coming in from around the world pilots have called in and identified signs of fire. And because of the existence of federal and provincial land the more information the fire department has to work with the better.

A fire permit can be obtained

at the municipal office, the landfill sites, public libraries, and at Nogies Creek Station 4. They are free.

Farmers’ market

If you are looking for some maple syrup to take to some of your non-Canadian friends this summer visit Lynn Stevens at the Buckhorn market. Perhaps you would like to know the latest items for sale at Costco. Look no further than the Buckhorn farm market where Costco will provide their latest marketing information. At this time there are ten new vendors at the market which opens for business Tuesday.

Photo books, homemade coast-

ers, hand crocheted items, vegetables and herbs, Victorian nightdresses, birdhouses and bread, pastries, jams and jellies will all be supplied by vendors new to the market opening at the Buckhorn Community Centre on Tuesday.

The 49 returning vendors will be supplying pottery, table linens, VQA wine, leather goods, information on sustainable Peterborough, Voxxlife socks and insoles, plants…..

All money raised by the market goes to the BCC with a donation to the Buckhorn Public School Breakfast Club. Organizers Janet Clarkson, Ellen Dumas, and Margaret Bleszynski anticipate another successful market season and look forward to seeing you at the BCC on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers

After opening the John Earle Chase Memorial Park to the public, Kawartha Land Trust, Trent Lakes Municipality and Buckhorn Trails Association volunteers continue work at the property taking down fences, rebuilding fences, pulling invasive mustard garlic weed, mowing trails and like many lists it never seems to shorten. If you are interested in helping these three organizations continue to work on this property watch the Kawartha Land Trust web site for their work schedule or call 705-657-1608.
