Second fastest time in Canada this season
Peterborough Legion Track Club racewalker wins gold at District F finals in Oshawa
Members of the Peterborough Legion Track Club led an onslaught on both the medals and the record books at Saturday’s District F Championships in Oshawa.
Leading the record charges was Audrey McCarthy, 16, with a time of 16:55.1 in the 3000 metre racewalk. Her time is second fastest in Canada this season.
“It’s a bit tough to race by yourself,” said McCarthy, “but overall I felt it was a good start to my outdoor season.”
She also won the girls pole vault with a 2.2m jump.
The pole vault was the target of two more records with Ian Dafoe winning the midget boys event with a 3.6m leap shattering the old mark by a whopping 35 cm.
“I just got onto a new pole and it obviously did the trick,” Dafoe said.
The 15-year-old had to stop not from the effort but because of rain. He also won the 1500m steeplechase with in 5:53.84.
The old mark was held by teammate Nathan Therault who then set his own youth record with a 3.5m leap, also 35cm over the previous best.
The 16-year-old won silver in the 110m hurdles stopping the clock in 17.32 seconds.
Also winning gold medals were Makayla Kamping, 14, in the midget girls triple jump with a 9.56m best, and Jacob Hoy, 15, in the youth discus with a 26.61m throw.
Sonya Svichkova, 16, took two silver medals with a 2.0m pole vault and a 1.35m high jump. Aaron Park won a silver with a 41.37m throw in the youth javelin and a bronze in the discus with a 29.64m heave. Carolyn McCarthy won a bronze in the midget pentathlon.
