JV, bantam Wolverines beat Toronto Argos

The Peterborou­gh Wolverines completed the fifth week of the Ontario Football Conference by hosting the Toronto Jr. Argos in a triple header at the Thomas A. Stewart Field on Saturday.

The Wolverines were able to win two of the three games with the Bantams winning 41-12, the Jr. Varsity handling the Jr. Argos 33-18 and the Sr. Varsity Wolverines losing 29-19.

In the opening game the bantams got off to a great start and easily built a 35-6 lead at the half. Both teams played on even terms in the second half with each scoring one touchdown.

The bantams improved their record to 2-3 with the 41-12 victory. Scoring for the Wolverines with single touchdowns were Sam LeVasseur, Joe Parsons, Ryan Forsythe, Spencer Watchorn, Quintin Nattress and Tristan Ross. Ryan Forsythe recorded three successful convert kicks.

The bantams will have a bye over the Canada Day weekend and will prepare to face the Oshawa Hawkeyes on July 7 in a triple header at the TASSS Field.

In the second game the Wolverines Jr. Varsity team continued their unbeaten string to four straight games as they handled a determined Jr. Argo squad 33-18 and improved their record to 4-1. Both teams played aggressive­ly and tough in the first half with the Wolverines leading 14-3 at the half. The Wolverines were able to pull away in the second half leading to their 33-18 victory. Scoring for the Wolverines were Mack McFarlane and Thomas Switzer with two touchdowns each and a single touchdown by George Kendall. Spenser Vesnaver recorded three convert kicks.

The Jr. Varsity Wolverines will also have a bye this weekend as they will prepare to face one of the top teams in their division, the Oshawa Hawkeyes on July 7.

The final game of the day saw two teams battle in a tough contest with the Jr. Argos finally securing the victory with a fourth quarter TD.

The two teams played aggressive defense and were able to use special team plays which helped to factor into their scoring. The Jr. Argos scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the half to take a 15-12 lead at the half. The Wolverines and Argos each scored a touchdown in the third quarter with the Argos leading 22-19 going into the fourth quarter and they sealed their victory with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to defeat the Wolverines 29-19. Nick Clarkin had another great day scoring two TD’s with one a spectular punt return of 55 yards for a touchdown.

Zac Vesnaver was successful on two convert kicks and added a 20-yard field goal. The Wolverines also recorded a team safety.

The Sr. Varsity Wolverines remain winless at 0-5 and travel to Cornwall on Saturday to face the Wildcats in a 1 p.m. game.
