A vintage trolley will soon be giving free rides downtown on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, carrying passengers to Del Crary Park’s outdoor Musicfest concerts.

The rides begin June 30 and run until Aug. 25.

The accessible trolley will leave Confederation Square (across from City Hall) and run south along George St. to Del Crary Park before looping back along Water St.

It will operate from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., making stops on the west side of George St. at Brock St., Hunter St., Charlotte St. and King St.

The trolley program was unveiled in front of Showplace on Wednesday by DBIA executive director Terry Guiel, Coun. Dean Pappas and Musicfest general manager Tracey Randall.

The trolley was last used downtown for a one-day event, Doors Open, and was very popular - so much so that Guiel and Pappas talked about ways to bring it back.

The trolley is owned by Michael Bryant of Little Britain.

It’s a bus that’s been converted into a San Francisco-style trolley, complete with a wooden interior.

Bryant was at the program launch on Wednesday. He said that when the trolley comes to Peterborough, it will arrive full of people from Lindsay who want a lift to Musicfest.

“It’s a free ride to a free show,” Pappas pointed out, adding that

there’s no need to even worry about parking when you take the trolley.

There will be a few trolley rules to follow, Guiel said: priority seating will be offered to seniors, expectant mothers and parents with small children.

He also said the trolley may sometimes be full when it leaves Del Crary Park following the concerts, and people will have to be patient.

The trolley rides are free thanks to sponsorships from Aon Inc., Cogeco YourTV, James Fallen, Ontario Carpetman Supermart, Gerti’s and the DBIA.

The first Musicfest concert is on June 30 and will feature the rock band Starship.
