Jr. C Lakers star to play with University of Delaware Blue Hens starting in 2019-20 season

Mike Robinson is following in the footsteps of some great Peterborough lacrosse players.

But the Peterborough MinCom Kawartha Lakes Realty Jr. C Lakers standout is just looking to be himself.

Robinson has verbally committed to play NCAA Division I field lacrosse with the University of Delaware Blue Hens for the 201920 season. Peterborough native and lacrosse legend John Grant Jr. set scoring records at Delaware. Scott Evans also played at Delaware.

Robinson will return this fall for a third year, his senior year, at Culver Academy in Indiana where Peterborough’s Ethan Walker set scoring records before moving onto the University of Denver where he is again rewriting school record books.

Robinson said he was certainly aware of the local connection to Delaware and it was a topic of conversation when he was recruited.

“They touched on it when I went and visited there,” Robinson said.

“He was obviously a big piece of their program and one of the greatest to ever play. It’s just awesome to be in the same town as him and in the same conversation in terms of our home floor. Being from Peterborough, a lot of big names have come out of here.

“I’m extremely excited about joining that program after Culver.”

Robinson missed more than half the junior lacrosse season as he didn’t get home from Culver until June 5.

He’s more than made up for lost time seeing double-duty with the junior C and Merit Precision Jr. A Lakers. He scored 12 goals and added seven assists in four regular season games with the junior C team and fired five goals and four assists in their 13-2 playoff opening win Saturday night against the Barrie Bombers. He’s also played five games for the junior A’s.

“The guys are great and I feel at home here so the adjustment only took a game or two to get back to the pace,” he said, of returning home to his teammates.

He was back on a bus to Six Nations with the junior A club on Sunday.

“I’ve been busy but I love it,” he said.

The junior C Lakers, led by Adam Churchill’s 100 points, boasted the top three scorers in the OJCLL this year with Riley Caldwell (91) and Travis Ferguson (77) second and third.

Had Robinson played the full season head coach Dave Baker has no doubt Robinson would have given them the top four.

“If he was with us the whole season he’s probably getting 120 or 130 points,” Baker said.

“He’s probably blowing the league out. He’s got a heavy shot. He’s a good kid. The guys like to move the ball to him because they know he can produce. Mikey is just out there having fun like the rest of them.”
