Withers, Currier up for rookie of the year

Peterborou­gh Century 21 Lakers captain Robert Hope has been named as a Colorado Mammoth nominee in several categories in the National Lacrosse League awards for the 2017-18 season.

Voting is underway to decide the league-wide winners. The winners will be announced later this year.

Hope is nominated in the most valuable player of the year, defensive player of the year and teammate of the year categories.

Peterborou­gh Lakers head coach Mike Hasen is nominated for NLL head coach of the year for his work with the Rochester Knighthawk­s, while Peterborou­gh native and former Lakers coach and general manager Jamie Batley is nominated for his work while he was coach with the Vancouver Stealth.

Peterborou­gh Lakers goalies Evan Kirk of the Saskatchew­an Rush and Matt Vinc of the Rochester Knighthawk­s, who were on opposite ends in the NLL championsh­ip series won by the Rush, are both nominated for goaltender of the year.

Two Peterborou­gh players are up for the rookie of the year award, Zach Currier of the Calgary Roughnecks and Jake Withers of the Rochester Knighthawk­s.

Also nominated for most valuable player of the year are Vinc, Peterborou­gh veteran Shawn Evans of the Buffalo Bandits, former Peterborou­gh Laker Curtis Dickson of the Calgary Roughnecks and new Peterborou­gh Lakers scoring sensation Corey Small of the Vancouver Stealth.

Also nominated for the defensive player of the year award is Peterborou­gh Laker Nick Weiss of the Buffalo Bandits and Peterborou­gh Laker Chad Tutton of the Georgia Swarm.

Weiss is also nominated for transition player of the year, along with Peterborou­gh’s Zach Currier of the Calgary Roughnecks.
