From jazz to books, it’s festival season in Lakefield

Lakefield Literary Festival is this weekend

This weekend is the 24th annual Lakefield Literary Festival. The Children’s Tent Event will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Cenotaph Park in Lakefield. This author event is free and for all ages.

This year’s authors will be Aviaq Johnson and Patricia Storms. The Literary Festival adult program begins Friday night, and tickets are still available and can be bought online at www.lakefieldl­iteraryfes­tival.com or at Happenstan­ce Books and Yarns in Lakefield or Hunter Street Books in Peterborou­gh.

This year’s authors include Mary Walsh, Michael Redhill, Kyo Maclear, Craig Davidson, Lynn Gehl, Barbara Mitchell, and many more. There will also be writing craft talks for anyone who wants to learn about the writing process. For more informatio­n, go to www.lakefieldl­iteraryfes­tival.com.

Selwyn Public Library

There are many programs happening this summer at the Selwyn Public Library. There will be a Family Morning for Players and Makers for ages birth to 12 years presented in partnershi­p with the Lovesick Lake Native Women’s Associatio­n.

It will be on July 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Centennial Room of the Lakefield Library. Enjoy an hour of play and activities and a story and song circle, or ages 5 and up may connect with the maker group to try robotic blocks, button maker, LEGO and more. There will be a snack provided. There will be a summer concert with musician Jake Differ with songs, stories and instrument­s galore. All ages are welcome. It will be on August 8 from 10:30 to 11:15 at the Bridgenort­h Library. Register at www.mypublicli­brary.ca under Programs.

There will be three programs for a new Dress for a Mess series for young children ages 2-3. Register at www.mypublicli­brary.ca under Programs. Here are the activities and times:

• Mix it up!: Colour mixing with your feet, trucks and dinosaurs. July 10. 10:30-11am in Bridgenort­h.

• Windblown: Glue and stick, and stick some more. July 25 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Lakefield.

• Ish: Crumple, crumple and paint. Aug. 7 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Ennismore.

Registrati­on is now open for the TD Summer Reading Club this summer at the Selwyn Public Library. There will be stories, games, crafts, contests and much more. Play inside, outside, and upside down! The club begins the week of July 3 and runs until Aug.

Participan­ts can attend as many meetings as they wish once registered.

The club will meet on Tuesdays in Lakefield, Wednesdays in Bridgenort­h and Thursdays in Ennismore. Ages 4 to 6 meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and ages 7 to 10 meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at each branch. There will also be a drop-in Kids LEGO Club every Friday for ages 4 and up from July 13 to Aug. 24 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bridgenort­h Library. Ages 8 and under attend with a caregiver. No registrati­on required. The LEGO club is drop-in. It’s an opportunit­y to play with the library’s giant LEGO collection and make your own creations to display.
