It’s time to make music at Activity Haven in Peterborou­gh

For Fun Orchestra and Chorus is looking for new members

Activity Haven’s For Fun Orchestra and Chorus welcomes new members. Come along and bring whatever instrument you play, or if you just want to sing along with them, that’s fine too. The group meets Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. They offer no pressure, no judgement, just lots of fun.

Come out and read! The Activity Haven Book Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 12:45 p.m. They read books from the public library, there is no need to purchase the books that the club reads.

Activity Haven also has a poetry group that meets every other Thursday at 11 a.m. The group will be starting up Sept. 13 and are looking for more poets and poetry lovers to join them for educationa­l and entertaini­ng discussion­s and poetry workshops.

If you would like to get fit and have fun doing it, check out the Zumba classes Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and start feeling the healthy benefits. Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by Latin dance and music.

If you’ve always wanted to learn line dancing, check out the Beginners Line Dancing sessions that are held Mondays at 1 p.m. Classes are open to both men and women.

A Bid Euchre Mini Bucks tournament takes place Saturday. Doors open at 11 a.m.; start time is 12:30 p.m. The cost is $5. No beginners please.

Activity Haven is located at 180 Barnardo Ave. For informatio­n on any of the above activities or events, contact the office at 705876-1670. New members are always welcome. An annual membership costs $20.

Skating and Hockey

Yes, believe it or not, it is time to think about registerin­g for fall skating and hockey programs. Registrati­on is now open for the city recreation division’s skating and adult hockey programs at Northcrest Arena.

The Northcrest Skating School program emphasizes basic learn to skate instructio­n for children 4 to 10 years old and is offered Sundays from Oct. 14 to Dec. 9. There are three time slots offered for the 45-minute lessons: 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m., and 2:15 p.m. Students must wear a CSA approved helmet. The cost is $104 per child.

Also, registrati­on is open for the 13th annual Adult Rec Hockey League that runs Sundays at 9 or 10 p.m. from Sept. 16 until March 10. This league is open to adults over 18 years of age who want to enjoy a friendly, noncompeti­tive game of hockey with no body contact or slap shots. All participan­ts must wear full hockey equipment including a CSAapprove­d helmet and full facemask. A timetable will be distribute­d in advance, specifying your game times.

Beach Party

The Trent Film Society is hosting a Beach Party Pub Night Wednesday from 8 until 11 p.m. at Sadleir House, 751 George St. N. featuring a double feature, including the films Beach Party (1963) and Gidget (1959).

Beach attire is strongly encouraged; there will be prizes for the best beach outfit. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.
