Lakers down Kodiaks 15-8

Kyle Buchanan, Holden Cattoni and Cory Vitarelli all scored hat tricks as the Peterborou­gh Century 21 Lakers downed the Cobourg Kodiaks 15-8 at the Cobourg Community Centre on Sunday night.

The Lakers improved to 9-1-1 and increased their lead atop the Major Series Lacrosse standings to eight points on the Oakville Rock (5-2-1) and Six Nations Chiefs (5-4-1). The Rock, who hold three games in hand, pay their lone visit to the Peterborou­gh Memorial Centre 8 p.m. Thursday. The Lakers end their season with a home-and-home series against Six Nations who have one game in hand. The Brooklin Redmen (4-5-1) sit in third place followed by the Brampton Excelsiors (2-7-2) and Cobourg (1-7-2).

Cattoni added four assists while Buchanan and Vitarelli chipped in two. The Lakers built a 5-1 first period lead and never looked back. The team tied the second period 3-3 while the Lakers outscored Cobourg 7-4 in the third.

Shawn Evans had a goal and five assists, Turner Evans a goal and two assists, Mark Steenhuis and Chad Tutton a goal and assist and Bryce Sweeting one goal. Josh Currier had four assists with singles to Robert Hope, Thomas Hoggarth and goalie Doug Buchan. Peterborou­gh’s Riley Campbell had a goal for Cobourg.

The Lakers were missing Zach Currier, Jake Fox, Matt Gilray and Jake Withers who all departed Sunday for the 2018 FIL World Field Lacrosse Championsh­ips July 12-21 in Israel. Also sidelined were Nick Weiss, who suffered a high ankle sprain Thursday, injured reserve players Adam Jones and Ian Llord as well as Andrew Suitor, Cam Milligan and Evan kirk. Brett Coons, Tyler Gaulton and Dalton Hill were called up from the Ennismore James Gang.
