Withers scores for Canada at the World Cup

Former Peterborou­gh Lakers star Curtis (Superman) Dickson had three goals and an assist to help lead Team Canada to a 12-6 win over England in their opening game at the FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Cup in at the Wingate Institute in Netenya, Israel.

Peterborou­gh’s Jake Withers scored a goal in his world field lacrosse championsh­ip debut for Canada.

Jeffrey Teat also had a hat trick for Canada and two assists.

Joshua Byrne added two goals for the reigning champion Canadians, while Tyson Bell, Latrell Harris and Mark Matthews also had singles.

Canada outshot England 38-18. Alfred Scarpello led England with a pair of goals.

Canada is seeking to defend the title they won in 2014.

Also playing for Team Canada are Peterborou­gh Lakers Zach Currier, of Peterborou­gh, and Matt Gilray, of Oshawa, and former Laker Geoff Snider.

Canada will have televised games on TSN2 on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern against Scotland, on Monday at midnight against the U.S., Monday at 2 p.m. against Iroquois and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday against Australia.

Peterborou­gh Laker Jake Fox is playing for the Iroquois Nationals who dropped their opening game to Team USA on Thursday by a 17-9 score.

The Iroquois players were delayed in getting to the tournament because of delays at customs.
