Diary of an Otonabee farmer

1897 July 23, Fri. The hay is very wet this morning and the ground is muddy. We were making a garden fence at the house on lot 23. We made it of wire and it looks nice. Raining again this afternoon, I and the men were working at mangolds and potatoes. 1897 July 24 I went to town this morning and I was back before eleven o'clock. After dinner we had John Kerr and we drew in hay all the afternoon. Willie Starr was very little good today. He was saving himself for a trip to town tonight. He is a very disagreeable young man. 1897 July 27 Rained nearly all last night and most of today. After tea the men commenced to plough the sod in field No. #9. The ground is as soft and wet as it would be in early spring. 1898 Saturday July 23 Grieve and I were drawing in the last of our fall wheat, and I cut some barley. Most awfully hot and dry, no rain for twenty five days. 1920 Mon. July 26, This morning at eight o'clock I got on the Manilla Steamboat at George Street wharf and went to our cottage on Stoney Lake. Lovina and I took our canoe at the cottage and went five miles up the lake and went on a lovely island, put up our tent and camp beds and had supper and a lovely night and a good sleep. [John was 77 years old and Lovina was 76]. 1920 July 27 This afternoon I went on shore and picked some huckleberries. We have had another good day and a lovely night. 1920 July 28 This morning Lovinia and I went in our canoe to the head of the lake and picked a lot of berries and came back to the tent for supper. Another good day and night. 1920 July 29 This morning we took down our tent and packed up and came down to our cottage and called in a boat and came home. We arrived home at five o'clock this evening and found everything all right.
