Casas settles for two second-place finishes
Peterborough motorcycle racer Tomas Casas maintained his stranglehold on first place in the Canadian Superbike Championship’s Liqui Moly Pro Sport series with two second-place finishes in two races at the Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, N.S.
Falmouth, N.S.’s Jacob ShawO’Leary used his home advantage to win Saturday’s race, while Sebastien Tremblay, of Laval, Que., captured his first win after a thrilling three-way battle on Sunday.
The second-place finishes keep Casas, the division’s defending champion who rides a Yamaha YZF-R6, in command in first place in the series with 242 points, well ahead of Mitch Card in second place at 199 points.
The championship will be decided in the final race of the season on the Aug. 10 to 12 week- end at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park south of Pontypool.
“Sebastien was riding really well, but I was gaining on him in a few spots. It was just too late to make a move, and he really didn’t leave the door open at all,” Casas told CSBK’s Cam Bickle. “It was a well-deserved win for him, but I’m happy we brought home second-place for the championship.”
Casas was also 11th Saturday and 10th on Sunday in racing in the top Pro Superbike class and now sits seventh in the season standings at 100 points. Threetime defending champion Jordan Szoke is first with 275 points.
Meanwhile Jake LeClair, 17, of Blackstock, west of Peterborough, fell just shot of claiming this year’s Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike championship after a third-place finish aboard his Yamaha YZF-R3. He can wrap up his first title at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
