Mayoral races in most townships; Jones acclaimed

- JESSICA NYZNIK Examiner Staff Writer

Longstanding mayors in a handful of county townships aren’t seeking re-election this year, creating mayoral races in most of those municipalities.

Selwyn Township’s Mayor Mary Smith is stepping back from politics after serving a decade as mayor and two decades on council. Ron Black, former Deputy Reeve Andy Mitchell and Linda Eales are after that position.

In Asphodel-Norwood Township, Mayor Terry Low didn’t file nomination papers Friday, leaving his seat open to Deputy Mayor Rodger Bonneau and Coun. Debbie Lynch.

Dave Nelson, veteran reeve of Otonabee-South Monaghan, confirmed in June that he wouldn’t be running again, after 43 years in municipal politics. Joe Taylor, who is currently deputy reeve and Peterborough County warden, will be acclaimed as reeve.

In Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, Mayor Ron Gerow is taking a break from more than three decades in politics after undergoing a serious surgery. Jim Martin, deputy reeve, and Andy Sharpe, former deputy reeve, are vying for mayor.

Bev Mathews, mayor of the Municipality of Trent Lakes, isn’t seeking re-election. That means former mayor Janet Clarkson, and Coun. Peter Raymond aren’t

facing an incumbent this time around.

Meanwhile, in Douro-Dummer Township, J. Murray Jones was the only one to file for mayor, so he’ll be acclaimed.

But in Cavan Monaghan Township, incumbent Scott McFadden is up against Jim Chaplin and in North Kawartha Township incumbent Rick Woodcock faces Coun. Carolyn Amyotte. Meanwhile former Cavan Monaghan reeve and county warden Neal Cathcart is staging a political comeback by running for deputy mayor.

The deadline to file nominations papers for the municipal election was Friday. The election is Oct. 22.

The eight townships of Peterborough County will hold elections that day, as will the four school boards serving families in the city and county.

The mayors and deputy mayors (reeve and deputy reeve in Otonabee-South Monaghan) also sit on county council.
