Girl Power was a theme of the 2018 Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame’s annual bursary presentation.

Four exceptional studentathletes – Violet Hipkin, Aly Knox, Madison (Maddy) Moloney and Lily Stewart – were recognized at the Hall on Wednesday night. Each received $1,500 towards their post-secondary education.

Hipkin attended Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School where she achieved a 94 per cent average in her graduating year.

Over her high school career she played basketball, volleyball, cross country, soccer, track and field and lacrosse. In the past year, she led three TASSS teams to OFSAA and also went to OFSSA in badminton as a singles player.

In Grade 10 she sustained a serious knee injury and was told she might not be able to compete in sports again. Eleven months later she was back participating.

She will attend Trent University this fall.

“There are a lot of great athletes in our age group who applied for this,” said Hipkin, “so it’s really great to be recognized for all the hard work by your community.”

Knox attended Adam Scott where she averaged 95 per cent. She competed in cross country running, rugby, hockey and skiing at school as well as triathlon, hockey, cycling and Nordic skiing at the community level.

She was named the Adam Scott female athlete of the year. In 2016,, Knox won a silver medal at the Canadian National Triathlon age group sprint distance event and the next year competed at the World Triathlon Grand Final in Rotterdam.

Knox will attend McMaster University this fall where her father Greg is head coach of the Marauders football team.

“It’s great to be recognized,” Knox said.

“I want to thank my coaches and my family for supporting me. I couldn’t have got this award and done everything I did in high school without them.”

Moloney achieved an 83 per cent average at St. Peter’s. At school she played lacrosse, rugby and field and ice hockey.

In the community she was active in field and box lacrosse, hockey and volleyball.

Moloney also organized a number of athletic events at her school as well as coached teams at the elementary level and in the community.

Her successes have garnered her a number of awards from her school and community as well as an athletic scholarship to play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

“There are a lot of great athletes in Peterborough and to be recognized as one of the top ones means a lot to me,” Moloney said.

“It’s very humbling. I’m grateful for all the people who have helped me get to this place.”

Stewart achieved a 95.3 per cent average in at TASSS while playing rugby, hockey, lacrosse, badminton and volleyball at school and hockey and rugby in the community.

She made time to coach age group teams for the Pagans rugby club. Stewart has played on the Canadian U18 rugby team and a Toronto Elite team, the Ontario Storm and Pagans women’s team. She will attend Queen’s University this fall.

“This means a lot coming from Peterborough with all the help of my coaches from TASSS and the club. It’s amazing to have this honour,” Stewart said.
