Vlad Jr. giving dad ball from first Bisons home run

- LAURA ARMSTRONG

Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s first triple-A home run was a memorable one.

The 19-year-old third baseman and the top prospect in Major League Baseball hit the two-run shot off a breaking ball by Gwinnett Stripers starter Kyle Wright in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s 6-1 victory by the Buffalo Bisons. The monster home run reportedly travelled more than 404 feet over the centre-field wall at Coca-Cola Field, home of the Blue Jays’ top farm team.

Guerrero told the Bisons’ website that he has been working on a hitting the ball up the middle more in batting practice.

As for what he will do with the ball, which was retrieved by Bisons assistant general manager Anthony Sprague, Guerrero said he will give it to his father, recent Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Vladimir Guerrero.

Entering Thursday’s game, Guerrero boasted a .455/.581/.682 batting slash line with the lone homer and four RBIs in eight games with Buffalo. With the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, where he spent most of this season, Guerrero slashed .402/.449/.671 with 14 home runs and 60 RBIs in 61 games.

He has also shown some skills in the field. In the club’s first game of the series against the Stripers, Guerrero made a diving stop to his left to rob Gwinnett’s Phil Gosselin of a hit.

The play earned a shout out from his father on social media. The elder Guerrero retweeted a video of his son’s dive-and-spin move, with the comment:

“He also has a glove.”
