Pirates win third provincial youth club championship in row
The Peterborough Pirates Triathlon Club won its third straight Triathlon Ontario Youth Provincial Club Championship in the third annual Triathlon Ontario competition held Sunday at the Dunrobin KOS, hosted by the Bytown Storm.
The Pirates scored 660 points, the Hamilton Hammerheads took second place with 220 points and the hometown Bytown Storm were third with 200 points. Points were earned in the 14-15 and 12-13 age divisions.
In its third year of existence, the Youth Club Championship has grown each year as more youth programs begin to emerge. Eleven clubs participated this year, up from eight in 2017.
Sunday also served as another stop on the Youth Cup Series for both age divisions.
Astrid Bergman, extended her lead in the 12-13 girls division with her third straight victory.
The battle for second tightened up as only one point separates Reegan Chinchilla and Madalyn Gillis.
On the boys side, Kai Sulentic took the win and sits atop the series standings by one point over Lochlan Ridley who is stands in second after three races.
The 12-13 division’s next stop is this weekend at the Orillia KOS.
Emily Dodge out battled Nadiya LindeElmhirst and Aliya Capon for her second Series win in the 14-15 girls division.
Dodge also gave herself a seven-point lead over Capon, who holds second place over Linde-Elmhirst by four points with one final race to go.
Lukas Vadeika earned his second win in the Series on Sunday, putting him in third place with one race to go.
Only nine points separates places 1-8 in the standings with Peterborough’s Patrick Tompkins leading by one point over Ian Mackenzie.
The series finale, the provincial championships on Aug. 25, will be the deciding race to see who gets their name engraved on the cup.
