First aid, babysittin­g courses available for fall

St. John Ambulance holds classes at Lions Centre on Burnham Street

September is just around the corner and that brings new first aid classes from St. John Ambulance.

There are several sessions taking place at the Peterborou­gh Lions community centre, 347 Burnham St.

Standard First Aid: The standard first aid course has 13 hours of first aid training, including CPR for adults and automated external defibrilla­tion (AED).

Classes in standard first aid with level A CPR are slated for Sept. 6 to Sept. 7; Sept. 12 to Sept. 13 and Sept. 19 to Sept. 20 at the Lions centre. Times are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Standard first aid with level C CPR has an extra hour of training with the same dates and locations. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Emergency First Aid: The emergency first aid course is completed in one day and provides basic first aid training with CPR and AED procedures.

Emergency first aid classes with level A CPR happen Sept. 5, Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, also at the Lions Centre. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Emergency first aid with level C CPR and AED runs on the same dates. This class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SJA also offers weekend classes at their facility in Applewood Manor, 1500 Lansdowne St. W.

Standard First Aid: In September, there are standard first aid classes slated for Sept. 8 to Sept. 9; Sept. 15 to Sept. 16 and Sept. 22 to Sept. 23. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for level A CPR and 8:30 to 5 p.m. for level C CPR.

Emergency First Aid: There are three weekend courses planned for September, happening Sept. 8; Sept. 15 and Sept. 22 at Applewood.

Hours are 8:30 to 4 p.m. for level A CPR and 8:30 to 5 p.m. for level C CPR.

Babysittin­g Home Alone Course: SJA has added another babysittin­g course to their August timetable, set for Aug. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Babysittin­g/Home alone course is a full day workshop with lectures, workbook exercises and hands on applicatio­n of skills.

The program is open to youths 10 to 14 years old and teaches them skills to handle both day-today and emergency situations. The class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lions club

All SJA first aid courses come with a certificat­e valid for three years.

Ecology Park

Join the Ecology Park for their annual Family Night & Lantern Walk, taking place Aug. 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the lantern walk starting at 8 p.m.

The evening has naturethem­ed activities including face painting and bike decorating. Make a lantern or take part in a scavenger hunt.

Organizers will also present “Plugging into Nature” by Paddling Puppeteers.

This free show is funded by Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

The Ecology park is located at 1899 Ashburnham Drive (near Marsdale Dr.), with parking at the Beavermead lot.
