Learning to quilt in Buckhorn, stitch by stitch

- MARLYS KERKMAN SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER kerkmam@gmail.com

Plans are already being made for next year’s learn to quilt course at St. Mathew’s/St. Aidan’s Anglican church across from the locks in Buckhorn. This year four future quilters came to learn more about the details of quilting. Three of those four young quilters had no sewing machine experience. Now they know how to use the machine and can thread it.

The students that attend sew all the cut pieces to create a quilt. After doing that they definitely know how to use a sewing machine. A fee of $25 covers expenses. Yettie Ireland at 705-657-8108 can provide further information,

The Buckhorn Area Quilters' Guild will be sharing their quilting experience at their Quilt Show at the Buckhorn Community Centre, 1801 Lakehurst Road, on Sept. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A beautiful quilt will be raffled.

Dogs present completed a walk around and every pet present received a prize sponsored by Tom and Kevin at Village Pet Food Supply. Donations supported the creation of a dog park in the Buckhorn area.

Former mayor Janet Clarkson is a candidate for that position in the October municipal election. In her platform Clarkson states her opposition to a centralized works depot. She believes that dump passes should be available to use throughout the year. She would work with the county to get more services at transfer sites.

Clarkson states that she would support medical centres, tourist association, school, libraries and community centres and the sports pad.

She is presently involved as a volunteer at the New Canadian Centre. She is the community rep for the Buckhorn Public School. She created the Buckhorn Ratepayers Association. She helped raise funds for the new cenotaph at the BCC. Clarkson continues to grow the Buckhorn Farmers & Craft market along with a solid group of volunteers.

She lists her accomplishments as mayor: The Buckhorn Medical Centre, Buckhorn Tourist Association, Sandy Beach in Galway, rebuilding of the Kinmount Medical Centre, Sandy Lake Beach, Heritage Day and the Economic Development Committee.

She sees her position on county council as an opportunity to be a strong advocate for Trent Lakes.
