Commonwell donates $15K to local CAS

The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group is at it again, donating to organizati­ons in our community. This time The Commonwell, a local home and auto insurance company based in Lindsey, has made a donation of $15,000 to support the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Foundation located at 1100 Chemong Rd.

The donation will allow 30 local at-risk children to attend either a week of overnight camp or two weeks of day camp this summer.

“We are very pleased to support these potentiall­y life-changing camp experience­s for local at-risk children,” said Tim Shauf, president and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group. “A positive summer experience now, can truly make a big difference in the future of a young person in need.”

“The Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Foundation and The Commonwell consistent­ly share the same focus, the well-being of our local kids,” said Deb Aben, executive director of the Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Foundation. “Serving Peterborou­gh County, the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County, our Foundation is dedicated to providing enrichment opportunit­ies designed to help improve the quality of life for children receiving services from the (CAS).”

Kids Klub

A Kid’s Klub will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 463 Highland Rd., from August 27 thru Aug. 31. The club, intended for school-aged children, runs daily from 9:15 until 11:30 a.m. With the theme, We've Gone to the Dogs, there will be lots of opportunit­ies to learn all about these four-legged friends. A veterinari­an will visit to talk to about different dog breeds and basic dog care. A dog trainer is scheduled to visit Tuesday and a dog groomer visits Wednesday to share ideas about grooming. On Thursday the group will tour Pet Valu at Brookdale Plaza and on Friday, the Peterborou­gh Humane Society.

Snacks will be provided and there is no cost for this program. Pre-registrati­on is not required. For further informatio­n call the church at 705-745-0841.

Family Game Night

Play Café, Brookdale Plaza is holding its first family board game night, with Boardwalk Board Games, Aug. 27 from 6 until 9 p.m. There will be fun, hand-picked games to play and game guides on hand to help you pick games and learn how to play them.

Family Paint Nights

The Play Café, at Brookdale Plaza, offers Parent and Child Family Paint Nights for parents and kids ages four and up. These events fill up very quickly, so you might want to book your spot for one of the September paint nights now. Sessions will be offered Sept. 14 and 28, beginning at 6 p.m.

The nights are all about fun, creativity, and spending time together! No artistic talent is required. The cost is $39.55 for parent and child and $12 for each additional child.
