Ballots, Booze and Bullets in East City
Fundraising walking tour organized by the Trent Valley Archives
Trent Valley Archives (TVA) launched a new walking tour this summer called Ballots, Booze and Bullets in East City. Two successful tours were held earlier in the month, with an additional walk scheduled for this Saturday from 7 until 10 p.m.
Guided by a costumed story-teller, the tour’s focus is on the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and ’30s. During the walk, participants will see the residences and businesses involved with illicit activities in the area, as well as hear stories about “local car chases, alcohol-making activities and gangster curtailment”.
The tour will visit the new Black’s Distillery and afterwards, stop for a drink at Ashburnham Ale House, both located on Hunter Street East.
The cost of the tour is $22 per person which does not include the cost of any alcohol. The tour is not suitable for children. Those attending should bring ID. The tour leaves from outside Black’s Distillery, 99 Hunter St. E.

Hospice Donation
The New Hospice Peterborough Care Centre recently received a $25,000 donation for their Every Moment Matters Campaign from Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life.
“We are truly grateful for the generous gift,” said Shelley Barrie, Hospice Peterborough board chair. “We are stronger when we work together and when we have the support of companies like this.”
The new Care Centre, located at 325 London St., is expected to open in February 2019. It will include ten end-of-life care beds, creating a central hub for Hospice Peterborough for the delivery of hospice palliative care.
“We understand how important it is for patients to have access to hospice palliative care services close to home,” said Paul Beauvais, director, business development, group customer. “Our donation will help ensure patients are provided with handson care at the end of life in a homelike setting. This is a difficult time for any family, and we’re happy to help make these much-needed community resources a reality.”
Since 1988, Hospice Peterborough has offered support to individuals and families living in the City and County of Peterborough who are dealing with life threatening illness or grief. Their programs and services are offered free of charge.
Benefit Concert
A benefit concert for FRIENDS Peterborough takes place at Del Crary Park Sunday from 7 until 9 p.m. The concert will feature Pete Gauthier and his band, Washboard Hank and the Wringers and the McDonnel Street Gospel Quartet.
FRIENDS Peterborough is a humanitarian agency based in downtown Peterborough at 283 George St. N. that offers “help, hope and a hand up” to anyone who visits their office. Admission to the concert is free, but there will be an opportunity to make a donation to support the ongoing work of FRIENDS Peterborough.
Come on out for a great evening of music in the park!
