Field naturalists planning wildlife walk

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

Each Sunday morning until October 28, the Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) plan a wildlife walk to one or more local natural area to look for migrating birds and other signs of the changing seasons. Sunday’s walk will be lead by PFN member Chris Risley.

The outings carpool from the Riverview Park and Zoo parking lot at 8 a.m. and last approximately three hours. Bring a pair of binoculars, small gas contribution and dress for the weather.

The PFN holds their first meeting of the season Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Camp Kawartha Environment Centre, 2505 Pioneer Rd. Guest Speaker Scott Blair, a Trent University Environmental and Life Sciences M.Sc. candidate, will speak on The Native Brook Trout Population Within Harper Creek and Byersville Creek

Blair will present preliminary findings of the habitat use and movement of brook trout within the creek, along with reasons how these trout survive in this urban environment.

PFN welcome new members. The Sunday walks and monthly meetings are excellent opportunities to find out what they are all about. For further information visit peterboroughnature.org.

TVA Open House

Trent Valley Archives, located at 567 Carnegie Ave., is holding an Open House Saturday from 1 until 4 p.m. to commemorate significant historical anniversaries.

“The Cumberland or Colony Settlers from the Alston, England area were the first to reach the Peterborough area in 1818. Families such as the Dixons and Lees amongst others were led by Thomas Milburn to become successful landowners and major contributors to our community. Their descendants may be particularly interested in speaking with historian Elwood Jones during this event about their ancestors’ accomplishments,” states a release for the event.

The end of the Great War (WW 1) in November 1918 will also be commemorated with photos, letters and medals from the Elmer Brown collection and a display of authentic pieces of WWI military kit.

Come and check out the Archives, genealogical resources, and books available for purchase. Refreshments will be available.
