Peterborough Curling Club completes accessibility upgrades
On Tuesday, the Peterborough Curling Club held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the upgrade of the front and side doors of the curling club with new motorized accessibility features and energy saving benefits.
Otonabee Ward Coun. Lesley Parnell joined club president Bruce Thompson and senior men’s league president Dave Calvert to congratulate the efforts made by the volunteers involved with the project.
“The Senior Men are pleased to fill a need and benefit all aspects of the club and banquet hall. We are so fortunate to have so many members contribute their time and expertise to this project,” Calvert stated.
The increased accessibility at the club is already making a difference.
The Senior Men’s Renovation and Accessibility Initiative project was funded by federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The $25,000 grant was initiated by club member Rob Roy, with the help of his wife Doreen, and the Senior Men’s curling league.
After the ribbon cutting the first club members through the accessible doors were wheelchair curlers Carl Bax and Alec Denys.
The Lansdowne St. W. club is only one of five curling clubs in the province with the capability to offer wheelchair curlers an opportunity to curl.
