Petes are feeling plaid all over again

- LANCE ANDERSON Peterborough This Week

Some things never go out of style, especially when they are plaid.

And that’s a good thing especially when you’re trying to raise money for the United Way of Peterborough and District.

On Nov. 1, the Peterborough Petes and the United Way will once again partner for the Petes Plaid Night.

The players will where specially designed plaid jerseys when they take on their rivals the Oshawa Generals at the Memorial Centre at 7 p.m.

For $20 people can purchase a ticket for a lower bowl seat. Seven dollars from that will be donated to the United Way.

This is the second annual Petes Plaid Night. Last year’s United Way campaign chairman Neil Morton came up with the idea and agreed to be the chair of the event this year. He’s been working closing with Megan Murphy, this year’s United Way campaign chair.

“I’m thrilled I’m back on board as chair of the Petes Plaid Night this year. It was a ‘plaid-tastic’ dream of mine to get this started last year,” Morton said.

“I grew up in Peterborough going to Petes games, I grew up wearing plaid and plaid was the theme last year for the United Way.”

Murphy said she hopes the momentum from last year’s Petes Plaid Night carries over. In 2017, around $30,000 was raised and she hopes to hit that mark again.

To help, both the United Way and the Petes are partnering with Fleming College students from its sporting goods business program. Teacher Charlie McGee said students will be organizing the silent auction component of the evening. Items up for auction will be displayed in the Peterborough Memorial Centre’s lobby on game night.

“The silent auction really allows the students to (use) their entrepreneurial skills together with their networking skills and organizational skills and special events skills,” McGee said. “And we’re excited to be involved. The United Way is a very, very special part of the community … and Peterborough really rallies around those special events.”

McGee said the students are currently seeking out items for the auction which will include sports memorabilia. Any individual or business that would like to donate an item are encouraged to call the United Way office at 705742-8839. Bolton Kirkof, co-ordinator of group ticket sales and service with the Petes, said the team is happy to once again do its part for the United Way. The Petes enjoy helping agencies in the community, especially the United Way, he said.

“The Petes are really proud to be used as a platform for the United Way to generate funds as well as build awareness through our second annual Petes Plaid Night,” Kirkof said.

“The awareness we continue to build through this event will help foster great relationships and partnerships like the Fleming College announcement we have here today.”
