Hawk watch

Peterborough Field Naturalists have organized a trip Saturday to the Cranberry Marsh in Whitby for the annual fall hawk watch. The group will be led by PFN member Martin Parker.

This outing will provide an excellent introduction to this prime hawk migration monitoring location. Each fall hawks and other raptors are blocked by

Lake Ontario as they head south, causing them to migrate westerly along the north shore of the lake looking for a way around it. Buteos and eagles may be spotted, but if not, there are other things to see at the site.

Those wishing to attend should meet at 9 a.m. at Tim Horton’s parking lot at the Canadian Tire/ Sobey’s Plaza, Lansdowne St. W. to carpool to the site. Return time is late afternoon. Bring a packed lunch, binoculars, clothes suitable for the weather, and a portable chair.

Fall colours

The Peterborough Filed Naturalist Sunday wildlife walk will be a fall colours trip led by member Don McLeod to Ballyduff Trails and Fleetwood Creek. This will be a joint outing with Willow Beach Field Naturalists (WBFN).

The Ballyduff Trails are on private property owned by Ralph McKim and Jean

Garsonnin who share their trails with the public through an agreement with the Kawartha Land Trust. The nearby Fleetwood Creek Natural Area is managed by Kawartha Conservation. The group will look for birds, wildlife tracks and signs and enjoy the fall colours.

Please note instead of meeting at the zoo, those interested should meet at the public parking lot on Crawford Dr. at the end of Harper Rd. at 8:30 a.m. to carpool 25 minutes to the site. Bring a packed lunch, binoculars, camera and picnic blankets or lawn chairs if you have them. Accessibility is moderate with some uphill walking.
