First aid, babysittin­g courses available for fall in East City

St. John Ambulance hosts several first aid courses in November, taking place at the Peterborou­gh Lions community centre, 347 Burnham Street.

Here’s a look at the dates and types of training available.

Standard First Aid: This class gives participan­ts 13 hours of class time, which includes training in using an automated external defibrilla­tor (AED).

Classes in standard first aid with level A CPR are slated for Nov. 7 to Nov. 8; Nov.14 to Nov. 15; Nov. 21 to Nov. 22 and Nov. 28 to Nov. 28, all at the Lions centre. Times are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Standard first aid with level C CPR has an extra hour of training and includes training for adult, child and infant CPR This class has the same dates and locations. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost is $159 for level A and $179 for level C.

Emergency First Aid: The emergency first aid course provides 6.5 hours of basic first aid training with CPR and Auto AED procedures.

Emergency first aid classes with level A CPR happen Nov. 7; Nov. 14; Nov. 21 and Nov. 28, all at the Lions Centre. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $110 for level A or $120 for level C.

Emergency first aid with level C CPR and AED runs on the same dates. This class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SJA also offers weekend and evening sessions at their facility on the lower level of Applewood Manor, 1500 Lansdowne St. W.

Weekend class dates for standard first aid are: Nov. 3 to Nov. 4; Nov. 10 to Nov. 11; Nov. 17 to Nov. 18 and Nov. 24 to Nov. 25 at Applewood.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for level A CPR and 8:30 to 5 p.m. for level C CPR.

Renewals: Do you need to re-certify your current CPR certificat­e?

There is a CPR and AED renewal class slated for Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for level A or 8:30 to 5 p.m. for Level C at SJA’s Training facility at Applewood. Cost is

$75.

Babysittin­g Basics/Home Alone: SJA has added a babysittin­g course later this month. It runs Nov. 23 from 8:30 to 3:30 at the Lions Centre.

The workshop is for youths 11 to 15 years old and develops skills in safety rules, responding to emergencie­s and leadership.

Students learn how to care for infants and toddlers; sick or injured children and handling emergencie­s. Cost is $69 and includes a workbook to take home.
