The opening reception for the “We the Five” art show in the Heritage Room at

The Mount Community Centre, 1545 Monaghan Rd., will take place on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit features the works of Anne Hoover, Carol Forbes, Lisa Clark, Ian Smith and Andrew Rothfischer.

“This group of artists creates works of art passionately with bold strokes that command your attention,” says organizer Ellen Cowie.

“This exhibit presents five emerging /aging artists who came together three years ago to help each other to explore new creative roads,” says Anne Hoover. “It started out as monthly critiques of each other’s works and shared workshops. Soon, though, our group offered much more: structure and motivation, inspiration, encouragement, challenge and friendship. We began to witness each others’ creative process as it changed over time and sometimes even became part of it through our suggestions and insights.”

Anne Hoover draws the human form in all of its beauty and complexity. She loves bodies – how they move, how they change, what we express with them.

Carol Forbes is an abstract artist who explores form, line, colour and the infinitely possible combinations of those elements using a variety of media. She has studied art at the Haliburton School of Art + Design and St. Lawrence College.

Lisa Clark says that her work is both response and expression - a response to the marks on the canvas and an expression of her inner world.

Andrew Rothfischer’s works are the result of his three-year exploration into abstract and non-objective painting. After years of sculpture and landscape painting, he says that he is learning to “pare away the scaffolding of realism and play only with the essential elements of visual composition.”

The exhibit runs until Dec. 27 at the gallery, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Enter through the main doorway at the north end of the building.

Potters at AGP

The Kawartha Potters Guild are presenting a juried exhibition of members' work at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, 250 Crescent St., co-ordinated by board member Angelo diPetta with juror Joni Moriyama from Toronto.

“Of the 49 pieces submitted, Joni selected 25 for the exhibition,” says Lillian Forester, past chair.

“The works represent a wide variety of processes from sculptural, handbuilt and wheel to raku, smoke-fired and electric fired. Joni selected works from some founding members of the guild including Anne Young, Cathy Allen and Margrit Beesley.”

Forester says that it was exciting to see several newer members included in their first exhibition, which provided an opportunity to be creative without any restrictions or commercial considerations.
