Annual show attracted crowds to community centre

The fall Buckhorn Craft Festival recently celebrated its 40 year anniversary. In 1978 after experiencing success with the first art festival it was determined to hold a craft festival. Joan Hilyard was the first chair. Kay Creighton, mother of Judy McWhirter, BCC manager, followed Joan. Diane Michell, present chair, took over in 1985.

Of all the vendors present in the many buildings one vendor has been there since the beginning.

That is Phil Hobbs, a leather craftsman. Ria Collins and her knitting products have been present since the second show. And vendors continue to apply for a chance to show their wares. A variety of crafts are available from sparkling star mobiles to hand made soap, from hand made furniture to home made chocolate, from hand made jewellery to garden fixtures, coffee and sweets, pillows and sweaters. Terry Lambshead

Terry Lambshead, presently municipal councillor for the Galway-Cavendish Ward, is this election running for councillor at large. In this term his portfolio included the Galway Hall Board, the Cavendish Community Policing Committee, the Committee of Adjustment, property Standards Appeal Committee, Silver Lake Cemetery & Galway Cemetery board, and the Waste Management Committee.

Lambshead was born and raised in this community where he presently resides with his wife Kim, daughter Maria and other family members. He has gained respect as a businessman in his business Terry Lambshead Contracting. An active volunteer he has been a volunteer firefighter for 20 years. He describes himself as knowledgeable of local and seasonal issues and committed to “working for you” to ensure financial responsibility, transparent governance in a “professional, results oriented manner.” He asks for your vote.

Peter Franzen

Peter Franzen is this election running for councillor in Harvey Ward. Franzen previously served 10 years on municipal council and as deputy reeve he was representative for three years on county council. He lists other experience as former president of buckhorn Tourist Association, current Board member of Trent Lakes Library, current board member of Kinmount Medical Centre, past president of Pirates Glen Community Association and former president of Galway Ratepayers.

Franzen strongly opposes a centralized road depot, seeing the municipality as too large to centralize this service. He would support a pilot project in waste collection in places such as the Sugar bush, Pirates Glen, Buckhorn lake Estates. He also supports re-establishing a water committee in Pirates Glen, Alpine Village and Buckhorn Lake Estates. Peter supports a 52-bag limit at transfer stations at no additional cost. He strongly objects to any further amalgamations or a move to a single-tier municipality.

Voting process opened Tuesday and closes Oct. 22.
