RONA stores closing in Peterborough, Lakefield
Retail chain shuttering 27 stores across the country
The Peterborough and Lakefield Rona stores are closing.
On Monday, Rona’s parent company, Lowe’s Companies Inc., announced the closure of 31 Canadian stores and 20 stores in the United States.
Local stores affected are located on Chemong Road in Peterborough and on Water street in Lakefield.
When contacted Monday morning, the Chemong Road store manager referred mykawartha.com to the Lowe’s public relations office.
The Lakefield manager said the news was still “fresh” and to call back later Monday.
It’s unclear how many employees are affected.
According to a press release from Lowe’s, the decision to close the stores was based on the company’s ongoing strategic reassessment. The release reads the company is winding down certain “underperforming” store locations.
“While decisions that impact our associates are never easy, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO, in a prepared release. “We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe’s stores.”
Lowe’s expects to close the impacted stores by the end January 2019.
To facilitate an orderly wind-down, the company intends to conduct store closing sales for most of the impacted locations with the exception of select stores in the United States which will close immediately.
