MUSE Film Series is back for another season

Museum fundraiser offers lineup of acclaimed new films

Muse Films is back for another season, with eight films fresh off the Toronto Internatio­nal Film Festival.

The long-running film series is a fundraiser for the Peterborou­gh Museum and Archives, made possible through a partnershi­p with the Toronto Internatio­nal Film Festival Group.

MUSE films screen Mondays at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Galaxy Cinemas, 320 Water St. Doors open 30 minutes before screenings.

Series passes for the Winter/Spring 2019 season are available now. The cost for a pass is $115.50 including tax.

The passes are only available through the Memorial Centre box office, either in person at the Memorial Centre box office; by phone at 705-743-3561; or through the website at www.memorialce­ntre.ca

Rush tickets for each film are $15 and are available 10 minutes prior to the screening at the MUSE courtesy desk in the Galaxy Cinemas lobby.

Here’s a look at the lineup.

• Jan. 14, Anthropoce­ne: The Human Epoch — In this Canadian documentar­y, filmmakers travel to six continents and 20 countries to document the impact humans have made on the planet.

• Jan. 28, What They Had — This U.K. film features Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon, Robert Forster and Blythe Danner. A woman returns home at her brother's urging to deal with her ailing mother and her father's reluctance to let go of their life together.

• Feb. 11, Leave No Trace — This film is a U.K. production from 2018. A father and his teenage daughter have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundin­gs, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland.

• Feb. 25, The Silent Revolution — This German production is set in 1956. A classroom of twelfth graders in the Communistc­ontrolled German Democratic Republic is traumatize­d when they discover what is really happening during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. The informatio­n brings them into conflict with the school and government authoritie­s, and only by sticking together can they save one or all members of the class from persecutio­n.

• March 18, At Eternity's Gate — This film features Willem Dafoe and takes a look at the life of painter Vincent van Gogh during the time he lived in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

• March 25: To be announced.

• April 8: To be announced.

• April 15, Stan and Ollie — This U.K. biopic features John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan as Laurel and Hardy, the world's most famous comedy duo. Laurel and Hardy attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on a grueling theatre tour of post-war Britain.

Lions New Year’s Eve

The Peterborou­gh Lions host their first-ever New Year’s Eve dance, set for Dec. 31, starting at 9 p.m. at the Peterborou­gh Lions community centre, 347 Burnham St.

Music will be provided by a D.J. The evening also has a cash bar and light lunch. Singles are welcome. Tickets are $30 each and must be purchased in advance, available by calling the Lions centre at 705-740-2288.
