A series of costume prizes for A Series of Unfortunate Events
TORONTO — The fantasy show “A Series of Unfortunate Events” has won several prizes at a new awards gala for the best costumes in Canadian film, television and media.
The Vancouver-shot Netflix show swept the three categories in which it was nominated at the Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design awards.
That includes best costume illustration for Keith Lau, excellence in textile arts for Sage Lovett and best costume design in sci-fi/fantasy TV for Cynthia Summers.
Oscar-nominated designer Luis Sequeira won best costume design in a period film for his work on the Cold War-era love story “The Shape of Water,” about a mute woman who falls in love with a sea creature. “The Shape of Water” was also recognized in the crafts category for building, won by Tamiyo Tomihiro.
On the TV side, Debra Hanson’s selection of sometimes outlandish outfits for CBC’s “Schitt’s Creek” earned her the win for best costume design in contemporary TV. That show centres on a once-rich family whose designer duds are among the few remnants of their previously privileged life.
The award for best costume design in period TV went to Alexander Reda, for CBC’s “Anne with an E.”
The CAFTCAD awards are run by the Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design, which formed in 2008 to promote costume design in film, television and media.
