First aid courses will be offered all through March in East City

CPR, babysittin­g and other classes available through St. John Ambulance

St. John Ambulance hosts several first aid courses in March, happening at the Peterborou­gh Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St.

What’s available? Read on. Classes in standard first aid with Level A CPR are slated for March 6 to 7; March 11 to 12; March 20 to 21 and March 26 to 27, all at the Lions centre. Times are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Standard first aid with Level C CPR has an extra hour of training and includes training for adult, child and infant CPR. This class has the same dates and locations. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost is $159 for level A and $179 for level C.

Emergency first aid: The emergency first aid course provides 6.5 hours of basic first aid training with CPR and AED procedures.

Emergency first aid classes with level A CPR happen March 6, March 11, March 20 and March 26, all at the Lions centre. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $110 for level A or $120 for level C.

Emergency first aid with level C CPR and AED runs on the same dates. This class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you can’t attend day courses, SJA also offers weekend and evening sessions at its facility at Applewood Manor, 1500 Lansdowne St. W.

Weekend class dates for standard first aid are: March 2 to 3; March 9 to 10; March 16 to 17 and March 23 to 24 at Applewood. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for level A CPR and 8:30 to 5 p.m. for level C CPR.

Weekend courses in emergency first aid are also slated for March 2, March 9, March 16 and March 23 at Applewood.

Standard first aid renewal: If you need to recertify your training, there is a renewal course in standard first aid slated for March 28 at the Lions centre. Cost is $120 and renews your certificat­e for three years.

Babysittin­g

Babysittin­g basics/home alone is a one-day class, with several dates available during the March school break. Dates are March 8, March 13, March 14 and March

15, with hours from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The program is ideal for the 10-to-14-year-old age group and is designed to teach babysittin­g, leadership, first aid, and home alone skills in a fun and informativ­e way.

Students learn how to care for themselves, infants, toddlers, and older children, which questions to ask parents, how to give first aid and CPR, what to do in emergencie­s and more.

The course combines activity book sessions, role-playing and hands-on first aid exercises to teach essential life-saving skills and build confidence.

Cost is $69 and includes the “Babysittin­g Basics” book. Students get a babysitter certificat­e when they pass the course.
