Greens choose nominee Feb. 25
Two people who ran for city council last fall are now chasing a local federal Green party nomination.
Jane Davidson and Brock
Grills are both interested in representing the Greens in the Oct. 21 federal election.
Davidson is a journalist and writer as well as a trained facilitator with the Be the Change Earth Alliance, a charitable organization for a sustainable world.
She ran for a seat in Town
Ward in the last municipal election in October.
Prior to that, Davidson helped Green party candidate Gianne Broughton with her provincial campaign last year.
Grills was born and raised in Peterborough, according to a news release from the Green party.
He graduated from Trent University with a degree in political studies, and has worked in sales, retail and customer service.
Grills ran for a seat in Otonabee Ward in the municipal election in October.
A Green party candidate will be selected at a nomination meeting, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Peterborough Public Library on Aylmer Street.
Other parties are also lining up their candidates.
Women and Gender Equity Minister Maryam Monsef will be the Peterborough-Kawartha candidate for the Liberals.
The Liberals did not have to have a nomination meeting before selecting Monsef as the candidate.
Under Liberal rules, current Liberal MPs are automatically nominated again as 2019 candidates provided the MP and the local Liberal Association meet certain targets such as getting an early start on fundraising.
It will be the second time Monsef runs against Mike Skinner, who is once again the candidate for the Conservatives.
Skinner is the president and CEO of the Innovation Cluster in Peterborough, which helps entrepreneurs launch new companies.
He was acclaimed last year as the Conservative candidate after running previously for the party in 2015.
No candidate has been chosen for Peterborough-Kawartha for the NDP; a nomination meeting is expected soon, with details to come on the website pkndp.ca.
The Green party will nominate a candidate March 6 for Northumberland-Peterborough South riding, which includes Asphodel-Norwood and Otonabee-South Monaghan townships in Peterborough County.
Jeff Wheeldon, a Brighton real estate agent who ran for the party in the provincial election last June, is the only candidate so far.
The association will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the HTM Room of the Cobourg Community Centre to choose a candidate.
New members are welcome, but must join first by going to www.greenparty.ca and making a minimum $10 donation or calling 1-866-868-3447. Anyone interested in becoming a candidate can apply at the same website.
