East City Public School chosen as new school’s name
The new public elementary school being built on Hunter Street East to replace King George and Armour Heights public schools will be called East City Public School.
Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board trustees approved the new name at their monthly meeting on Tuesday night.
The committee to name the new school had received 52 name suggestions from the public. East City Public School was chosen over three other names on the committee’s short list. The committee had recommended Shining Waters
Public School as its choice, but trustees opted for East City Public School.
“As always, these are difficult decisions not only for the committee but for the board as well in its deliberations,” board chairperson Diane Lloyd said.
The $20-million school is being built next to King George Public School and will house 675 kindergarten to Grade 8 students including a French immersion program and a child-care centre for the community.
It was supposed to be ready to open in September, but construction delays have pushed the opening back to 2021.
Prior to the suspension of classes by the COVID-19 pandemic, most King George students were being bused to the former Ridpath Public School in Lakefield for safety reasons
during the construction.
New trustee
Warkworth resident Emilio Ojeda was appointed Tuesday night by trustees to fill a vacant seat on the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.
Ojeda replaces Shirley Patterson as the trustee for Asphodel-Norwood and Havelock-Belmont-Methuen townships in Peterborough County and Trent Hills in Northumberland County. Patterson, a Havelock resident, died in January while in her third term as a trustee.
Ojeda will serve the rest of the term which ends Nov. 30, 2022.
