Cavan Monaghan policing contract could be extended
Peterborough Police’s contract to patrol Cavan Monaghan Township could be extended for another two years this fall.
The city police service has been patrolling Cavan Monaghan — in addition to the village of Lakefield in Selwyn Township — since 2015.
The current contract with Cavan Monaghan Township will expire at the end of September and, according to a new city staff report, police, city staff and township staff had been negotiating a contract renewal when the pandemic struck.
Because it’s unclear when the state of emergency may be lifted, city staff is recommending Peterborough city council offer a two-year extension of the current policing contract to last until Sept. 30, 2022.
City councillors will review the idea on Monday evening at a virtual committee meeting to be livestreamed on the city’s website.
The city staff report states that from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2020, the township would pay $324,249 for policing.
For Jan. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2022, annual policing increases for the contract with Cavan Monaghan would be based on negotiations with staff for sala
ries, the report states.
The police board started discussions more than a year ago about improving radio communications in dead zones of Cavan Monaghan.
But when the police board discussed it in the spring of 2019, they had a cost estimate of $244,000 for the improvements — and yet no certainty that Cavan Monaghan would renew the contract with city police.
The police board then set aside any discussions of the project.
If council agrees to the contract extension Monday, city staff suggests a further postponement of the improvements for the duration of the contract.
Road reconstruction
Councillors will consider committing to a plan to reconstruct Moorecraig Road and Roper Drive this summer.
The project would see a $3-million upgrade of Moorecraig Road and Roper Drive (from Wallis Drive to a point 30 metres west of Moorecraig Road).
A new city staff report recommends hiring Coco Paving for the job, the least expensive of five bidders in a competitive process. If council approves it, construction could start in June and be done by this fall.
