In anticipation of reopening, at a date as yet undecided, LAWS (Lakefield Animal Welfare Society) has created a wish list.

Donations of items from the list can be dropped off Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. outside the shelter where staff will collect them. LAWS is located at 2887 County Rd. 29, just north of the city on the road to Lakefield. Please do not leave donations at any other time as there will be no staff on site.

Items on the wish list include canned and dry cat food (plus grain free), canned kitten food, canned tuna and salmon, kitten milk replacement (KMR), chicken and beef baby food in jars, treats, toys, catnip, cardboard scratchers, washed fleece blankets and towels, both clumping and non-clumping litter (for kittens), and starter chicken feed that is used for litter for young kittens.

Monetary donations are also welcome and can be made online by visiting lakefieldanimalwelfare.org.

covAID

PTBOStrong is hosting covAID, a virtual concert fundraiser Saturday at 7 p.m.

Money raised during the concert will go to the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough and United Way Peterborough and District’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund for charities providing mental health supports in our community.

The concert will feature an evening of family entertainment with local musicians, community leaders and celebrities.

How do you watch? Connect to the PTBOStrong Facebook page or tune in to Cogeco’s YourTV at yourtv.tv/Peterborough. This event is sponsored in part by Oldies 96.7/Extra 90.5.

Official covAID merchandise is also available at imprintapparelstore.com/covid. There is a variety of T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies and caps. All funds raised from the sales of this merchandise go to the COVID-19 Community Response Fund.

TTOK

Local performer Shannon McKenzie is planning a variety show fundraiser for The Theatre on King (TTOK) and is looking for volunteer performers. The show will be held once it is safe to gather again.

“As we all know so many small businesses, in our community, are suffering during this crisis; independent theatres are not immune. Our beloved lil’ blackbox has lost months of programming/income,” says McKenzie.

Performers will work on their routines at home until the show can go ahead. Once the go ahead is given, there will be a quick tech/dress rehearsal before the fundraiser.

Who can sign up and what kind of performances are being sought?

“Whatever you want to do,” says McKenzie. “Burlesque, drag, circus, standup, interpretive dance. You wanna ride a unicycle across the stage whilst reciting Shakespeare? Go for it! Anything goes, with the exception of fire performances inside the space.”

All performances are voluntary; no type of remuneration is available. Just the satisfaction of helping out TTOK.

If you are interested in being part of this fundraising show, email shnnnleblanc@gmail.com for details.

YWCA

The YWCA Walk a Mile in her Shoes fundraiser for Crossroads Shelter, held for the past11 years, has been cancelled, but you can still donate online to help the women and children in our community who need to escape violence.

We have all heard on the news how the stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic has created an increased risk for some women now isolated and trapped in their own home, with fewer opportunities to ask for help.

“We anticipate a dramatic increase in the need for shelter, safety planning and crisis support over the coming months,” stated Ria Nicholson, major gifts officer, YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, in a recent release.

A donation of $64.65 pays for one safe night at Crossroads Shelter. Consider giving today to help women in need in our community.
