New COVID-19 outbreaks reported in Port Hope and Fenelon Falls

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes has increased to 143 and in Northumber­land County to 16, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported Tuesday afternoon.

That’s up from 141 City of Kawartha Lakes cases and 15 Northumber­land County cases on Friday.

Of the 143 City of Kawartha Lakes cases, 117 have now been resolved while 35 other people at high risk because of contact with confirmed cases are being monitored by the health unit.

Of the 16 Northumber­land County cases, 15 have been resolved while two other people at high risk because of contact with confirmed cases are being monitored by the health unit.

Northumber­land County has had a small outbreak involving less than five residents at Maplewood long-term care home in Brighton and a second outbreak in Northumber­land County has been declared by the health unit at Empire Crossing Retirement Community in Port Hope.

The Empire Crossing outbreak was declared after one asymptomat­ic resident tested positive during enhanced testing taking place at long-term care homes and retirement residences.

Haliburton County remains at seven confirmed cases with all seven resolved, bringing the total cases for the health unit to 166.

In the City of Kawartha Lakes, there are three outbreaks including one at Caressant Care Lindsay Nursing Home involving less than five residents and less than five staff members and another at Kawartha Lakes Retirement Residence in Bobcaygeon where a staff member tested positive last week.

The third outbreak was declared Monday by the health unit at Fenelon Court longterm care home in Fenelon Falls after an asymptomat­ic staff member tested positive.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths remains at 32 for the health unit, with 28 of them residents at Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon along with the wife of one of the residents. There has not been a new death at Pinecrest since April 9 and the Pinecrest outbreak was declared over last week.

Staff from Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay are providing a hospital grade cleaning for the 65-bed Pinecrest facility this week, according to administra­tor Mary Carr.

Some mini-horses were brought to the home Tuesday morning for a breakfast window visit for the residents.

Stewart Morrison Insurance Brokers Ltd. announced that it is donating $10,000 to the Bobcaygeon and Area COVID-19 Relief Fund which was set up to help out patients, families and health-care workers affected by the COVID-19 outbreaks in Bobcaygeon.

The number of inmates at the Warkworth Institutio­n medium-security federal prison east of Peterborou­gh who have been tested for COVID-19 remained at 30, Correction­al Service of Canada reported Tuesday, with all 30 testing negative.
